I picked up my Marriott Rewards credit card for the bonus points and the one free night offer. Can anybody clarify some fine print for me?

When it says, "certificate must be redeemed within six months from date of issue" what does that actually mean? I don't know how the certificate redemption works -- is it redeemed at time of booking, like airline mileage rewards, or is it redeemed at time of check-in or check-out?

To put it directly: I made my first purchase this week. I intend to use the coupon for a free night in late December. Will I be able to do so?
