Perhaps I was just lucky then... or the system works differently in the US stations?
I did OLCI about 16 hours ahead for my last PEK flight and got BN197. When I booked the flight a week earlier, all classes were very open. I was really surprised as this is a route that few people do OLCI. Even at that high BN number for a route with many DMs, I still got op-upped at check-in. BN may have some effect but not much.
For US flights, many people do mileage upgrades. Op-up chance is lower.
