We stay here every year. No question that there are lots of families with small children (ours included) because the hotel caters to us. So no matter what floor you will probably have kids nearby. We've never had an issue because most parents want children in bed early, but of course there are always exceptions. But if you are looking for romantic weekend better off at the new Ritz Northstar or perhaps a rental at Squaw Village - both of which are on the slopes.
We actually like the restaurants at Hyatt. I certainly wouldn't call them "bad" for either food or service, but that's a subjective things though I wouldn't call them gourmet or a good value.
The location is a bit of a hike from the resorts, but you can get to Northstar in 20 minutes and Squaw in about 40. I don't think I'd want to do that for an entire week, but no big deal for a weekend. If you want to be closer you can certainly find hotels in Truckee and Tahoe City but none are up to Hyatt standards. The villages at northstar and squaw have some great high-end properties but you'll pay a nice premium, and there are no FFNs or chain benefits anywhere.
I'd agree about the casino odds on slots, but there's not much competition and at least the 6:5 blackjack is gone.
