Did you take directly to the hotel? Just insist that they need to honor the original reservation. Usually they have flexibility because of now shows etc, also they can upgrade to a better room category. Just tell them that you expect the originally booked room (or something better), be friendly and firm and tell them that you would not accept a king or a smoking room.

When they still don't have the room at check in you can negotiate there.
