Hi, just some thoughts for Singapore.
Here, there's a few places that locals would typical go to buy cameras. They are (in no particular order): Courts, Best Denki, Harvey Norman and Challenger. Best and Harvey Norman are electronics specialists. Courts (spinoff from and separate from the original UK parent) does a lot of electronics, but does a lot of housewares as well. Challenger's main line is computers but sells a fair number of cameras. These are all fixed price locations and are chain operations. If you want to try haggling (but want some confidence that the merchant won't try to pull a fast one, like a bait and switch), there are a few camera shops in Funan Centre. This place is an upscale IT mall; in fact Challenger is the anchor tenant, Harvey Norman is there too. But there's I guess two or three camera outlets there. There's one other IT mall where you can buy cameras - Sim Lim Square, but some of the merchants might try to pull a fast one.
Considerations for purchasing a camera in Singapore:
- This is probably your best shot at getting a camera at a better price than home. Singapore is still technically a free port, most things (including electronics) come in without import duty. The other place to look is Hong Kong but you didn't say you were going there.
- There is a Goods and Services Tax here; same basis as VAT elsewhere - 7%. Note that there is a GST refund at the airport for tourists but you're going to have to buy a ton of stuff to get much of anything back.
- Interestingly Terminal 3 at Changi Airport has been advertising that they are absorbing GST - that's on the ground side. Don't know if there's any electronics stores there but it's worth a look.
Pricing? I've seen a 10 megapix Nikon going for S$200 at my neighborhood Challenger (say indicative US$1 = S$1.40.) Careful on warranties, some of them are Singapore only. Thus if there's a problem you'll have to pay to get it fixed at home. Then again if a couple hundred Sing $ is cheap, maybe it's easier to toss the device out and buy a new one.
