It may be worth your while to rent a car. It will save big $$ going to the Golden Triangle. We usually rent from Budget Thailand and drove up from Chiang Mai. That may be too hectic for most people, but the driving on the main road around Chiang Rai and the Golden Triangle is pretty mild.
