Sometimes the billing can be downright bizarre. In Feb 09, I had a 2 day rental reserved but ended up returning right at 1 day (no Sat night keep involved either way), and the total charges ended up being higher than the quoted reservation - but was adjusted by the manager on duty (along with some other issues).
So I guess my suggestion would be to keep the 1 week-2 day reservation and return early if you want - hopefully you'll get a discount but if you don't I'm sure you won't be penalized (if you are speak to a manager and get it adjusted).
On a separate note, on Thurs I rented at PSP and the contract printout was something outrageous ($890 for a 4 day rental) when my reservation quote was for $112. It was really strange since my pickup time was within 30 min of the reservation time, the counter rep adjusted it to the quote though.
