You are quite savvy,
YES you can do that. Punta Cana DR is N.A Gateway. The Airport code is PUJ, not PJU. and it is LA 2594. LA 2595 is opposite direction.
However, good luck in getting LA 2594 availability in Economy. Virtually impossible. Please let me know if you have luck. Is LA 2594 Business class "worth it" I do not think so but it may be your only option for award availability.
