Thanks Lobengula. Kenya actually - hardly the most cut-off place to live as an expat but in the days before the Internet and satellite TV it was amazing how isolated from Britain you did feel.
I'm actually flying back to NBO for the first time in 15 years in October and a small part of me was saddened when I saw that BA now fly 777s on that route.
Count yourself lucky! When I was growing up it was VC-10s only on that route with 2 stops en route (something like Cairo and Rome). From memory the choice was BOAC, BUA or EAA.
No IFE or anything

How did we cope??
I think the route went to 747s with BOAC in '72 or '73.
Would love to have the time to go back.
