i completely agree with that ... unfortunately, they haven't had any major issues for me to be able to do that ...

however, the same thing can happen with Winter Weather Waivers ... even allowed me to change from a flight I didn't want to something that I had much preferred but didn't do due to costs ...

All in all, these unexpected surprises give us lots of leverage to avoid change fees
