Thanks all for your feedback. My wife did travel on my Aeroplan points, her ticket was not paid. My ticket, was paid. I guess part of the problem is that I had never had the issue in the past (prior to this year). I was always able to get her upgraded. Upgraded without a certificate or points. I guess times have changed, thank you recession.
