Question - on Aeroplan ticket routing

We would like to go to DCA/IAD from YOW next (Easter) weekend.

We would like to stop over in YYZ - before returning to Ottawa. Such stopovers are allowed by a pure AC itinerary (15,000 Aeroplan miles for economy class classic or IKK awards), or a Star Alliance award (25,000 Aeroplan miles with AC/CO/US - stopover not allowed with UA).

The question is whether we can transit in YOW, when going onwards to YYZ from DCA/IAD. Of note, the Air Canada web site does state that such routing (DCA/IAD to YYZ via YOW) is allowed, for the purposes of a revenue ticket.

Can one transit, for an award ticket, through the city which will turn out to be the origin city, and also the final destination?
