Question re: Standby Upgrade Request

Hi everyone, I am flying Auckland-London through LAX, and put in for a standby upgrade to premium economy for the LAX-London segment (I'm only Jade - just moved to NZ - will be Silver by the end of the year). However, I just realized, I don't want a middle seat in premium economy. I would rather stay in economy and save my 220 air points than sit in a middle seat in premium economy. Do they let you decline an upgrade, or can I tell them that I only want the upgrade if I get a window or aisle seat? It's the 747 so I would love to have the upper cabin as well, but I know that is hoping for too much.

thanks for any advice!
