While they may not work with the 'closed system' that is Skype - you should however be able to get them working with other open VOIP account providers, e.g. sipgate.co.uk, etc.
[Similarly the people with the ATA etc.]
The only issue will be how locked down the firmware is. But ultimately it will be solvable.

The reason the plugin 'handsets' etc work with any service (including skype and IM programs etc) is because they are just plugged in accessories (a microphone, keypad and headphone), despite looking like a 'phone'. The account is on the computer, these are just input/output devices.

The Siemens phone and the ATA were the only devices that hosted the account themselves - meaning the computer could be turned off. Thankfully they were working on open standards and not something closed as per skype. So it will be possible to get them working with other providers. [Indeed the Siemens phone was sold by other providers as well as Tesco]

Apparently the Tesco solution provider, the Australian company freshtel/firefly is in difficulty.

Beyond getting the firmware on the devices unlocked (if necessary - my ATA is unlocked, I've been using it with various internal/external setups), number portability is the main problem.
