Actually it happens often. Macy's, Nordstrom and other retailers do this pretty frequently. Sometimes you don't even need to bring the product back, just the receipt and they refund you the difference between what you paid and they new sale price. Also, the Hyatt Big Welcome Back promo that is running right now can apparently be applied retro. All you have to do is register by the last day and the bonus will be applied retro to any qualifying stays. That said, I don't think WN is deceptive. They made a business decision of the rules for their promo that will cause many people to make new bookings and some people (like me) to spend more money on bookings they already have. From reading these boards, I think it would be nearly impossible to write T+Cs that didn't raise questions or some level of confusion among the members about the precise application of the rules. People often interpret things differently. Thank goodness for that - as a lawyer, it keeps me in business, which means I have spending money to go to San Diego on WN!!
