Is a shift manager really accountable for the depreciation? I would think all the accounting is handled at the regional or national level. I bet it's more the case that the employees want to do the minimum work rather than protecting asset values.

In the case of hotels, I think it is more likely that there is a manager on site who is responsible for inventory/revenue management.
