Koito is a very troubled vendor. According to an investigation led by the Japanese Ministry of Transport, Koito falsified fire and shock tests as and failed to receive approval for the material used in the back of the seats near the tray table.
Koito says it rushed through the process because of "heavy number of orders coming and tight scheduling."
The issue involves 150,000 seats on about 1,000 planes worldwide on 32 carriers, including CAL, which uses the Koito seats on all its types (737, 756, 777).
In 2009 Airbus banned Koito as one of its vendors.
In February 2010, Koito announced a plan to repair the defective seats, a process which is estimated will cost the company approximately $500 million.
Koito's problems have so far delayed delivery of at least two CO a/c.
