I have something similar on an upcoming flight. I selected seats at time of booking but cannot change them now (I fancied changing to one of the rows of two at the back of Economy). I thought it might be due to booking pre Skywards changes but it doesn't sound like this for you. I emailed Emirates CS about this a few months ago but haven't had the courtesy of a reply.
