Review: Hôtel Scribe Paris managed by Sofitel

This was my second stay at the Hotel Scribe, the first one having been less than impressive. The Scribe is centrally located in the Opera area of Paris and is housed in a 19th century building with just a small entrance which can easily be missed. The Roissy bus from CDG stops just outside and much better value than a € 45 taxi ride.

Inside the reception is just a small desk inside the cavernous ground floor which also features the bar/restaurant and coffee dock. While you might expect opulence from presentation on the website it is really not that grande. Check in was swift and easy (and did include a nice "welcome back"). Now I have to admit because I commented on some problems during my last stay the guest relation manager came immediately over and personally welcomed me and confirmed the upgrade (and very nice champagne welcome, and we are talking a full bottle, waiting for me in the room).

My room (552) was very large by Paris standards. Last time you could barely swing a cat in the room. And yes everything was there: drink voucher, welcome gift (biscuits) and housekeeping 5 minutes later delivered fresh flowers.

The bed was extremely large and the real deal: the Sofitel MyBed. Working area was good with plenty of outlets. WiFi is not free but at least prices have dropped through a partnership with Orange (€ 9 for 24 hours which can be used at any Accor hotel or Orange hotspot in France, Luxembourg and Belgium).

The bathroom was large with a separate shower and tub and Hermes toiletries.

Breakfast was an outrageous € 35 but of very good quality.

So would I recommend the hotel? Yes if you get a decent deal. Regular rates are on the wrong side of € 200 and while the rooms are good and nicely designed, the Scribe just is not that grande to wow me completely.

They do need to do some work on the ground floor to make it less looking like a train station but the rooms and service are solid.

The fact that they took criticism seriously and made a real effort to make up for the problem encountered last time was a definite positive and one other Accor hotels might want to take note of.

A-Club points posted 48h after check out.
