The OP should get a cash-back card. Every airline takes cash. Cash is subject to no blackout dates and virtually no availability restrictions. Cash is as immune an instrument as one gets to changing flight schedules and alliances. LAX-CUN just isn't like LGA-ATL, where you can know that Delta is going to fly it non-stop 10+ times daily.
