No doubt. It's trying to demonstrate to the world it can defy the laws of (Hong Kong credit card) gravity and not run a rewards programme.
The Octopus Rewards alternative is the closest I've come to being the kid in
Echoes of the Rainbow (歲月神偷) who thumps tables for crumbs.

Like you, I only use my HSBC card where it gets a discount, and even that can be a pain in the neck - I was recently simply refused the promised discount at Scirocco restaurant where the staff seemed to just want to vary the rules any way they could to avoid giving me a $60 discount.
