If you read the back of the upgrade certificate you would see that it says they cannot be used with Aeroplan (or any other) airlines award tickets. There are reports that AE flights can now be upgraded at check-in for a charge subject to space being available. I cannot confirm this by personal experience, just conversation from another FTer. I expect the charge would be in the range of $500 between Canada and Hawaii, each way, each person.
