Yes, at one time, you earned 1,000 Miles (if I remember right, the concept of "Medallion Qualification Miles did not exist - you flew 25,000 Miles or 30 Segments for Medallion status and 50,000 Miles or 60 segments for Royal Medallion status) per segment. In fact, I remember seeing a table published by Delta comparing the Delta Frequent Flyer program to other programs and it clearly showed that one of the reasons the Delta Frequent Flyer program was superior was that it awarded a minimum of 1,000 miles per flight, while other programs awarded only 500 miles per flight. I believe this table was published around the time Delta launched unlimited complimentary upgrades.
Another cool thing about that era was that your class of service bonuses were based on class of service
flown, not class of service
purchased. Hence, one of the "games" I used to play was to upgrade transcontinental flights because, with the number of miles you earned, you ended up earning nearly as many, if not more, miles than it cost you to upgrade. In fact, I remember joking with a friend of mine that Delta actually "paid" me to fly First Class
Ah, the days of a full, HOT meal on PHL-ATL flights (in coach!) and "Royal Medallion" service on select flights. I believe Delta also offered a "Royal Hawaiian" service on flights to Hawaii.
