Seems like the best bet might be to pay the 50RMB fee in the terminal to exchange USD to RMB so that we can pay the taxi driver...

Do you happen to have a BofA account, or Schwab, or something else with a fee free option? I had this very conversation with a friend before he came to China two weeks ago.
