To the OP: if you have no status with Hilton you will be playing Russian Roulette with rooms at the PH. You are far more likely to get a closet than anything else. The Hotel 71(Chicago natives will know it as the Executive House) has a very nice Riverfront location close to both Loop and Mag Mile culture, dining and shopping. Rooms are spacious and well appointed, though it has had some management issues they should not affect your stay. From there it is an easy and picturesque walk to the Palmer House, where you can visit the beautiful lobby and perhaps have a drink.
