The only obvious drawback to purchasing an A fare is, it is a coach purchased, upgraded to first ticket. Delta is in no way obligated to put you back into F or pay the difference between F and Y if you missed the flight or there is an IROP. My colleague learned the hard way, except he purchased an I fare going to BRU, which, according to SMS was a YUP fare. Meaning, he had to fly coach across the pond if he wanted to get there the next day or wait three days for any J inventory to open up. And did not receive any voucher or difference because he paid for coach.

This is not true! An
A fare is a discounted FC fare and an
I fare is a discounted Biz Class fare. If you experience a cancellation, there may indeed not be any up front seats available on the following flight, but that did not mean that your friend was not entitled to sit up front but for the lack of seats. But those fares are not upgrades, they are legit up front fares.
