I'm unsure of their official policy but they indeed eventually expire if your account has no activity for a while... Seems like a manual process, though.

I accumulated some points from a single trip about 7 years ago; three years later they took them all back with a comment line stating that it was related to account inactivity.

So I guess YMMV.
