AC Membership: Worth it?

I guess it depends upon your perspective and the cities you frequent, but I'd be very interested to hear from current members about how valuable they feel the clubs to be today.

Case in point, I am going on an international flight from LGA next week, and since it is a 7AM departure, I need to be at the airport at 4:30, when it opens (barf.) The AC opens at 5:00AM -- so what I'd LOVE to do is skip entirely the front desk checkin line, and proceed to the AC and chill with my VP until boarding time?

Is the above feasable? Even on an Int'l flight? And if so, is it STILL worth the $400/year (or whatever it casts as GLD/RBY?) I have a hard time understanding why they don't provide any kind of reward (i.e. miles) for folks plunking down four bills for an "exclusive" club membership.

Thanks in advance for what I know will be informed opinions. . .

best, Lewis
