AA to LHR award flight, then intra European flights

My son is planning to spend his spring term in London, and I expect to use AA miles to get him there. He probably will not know when he will return until he gets tired of travelling, runs out of $, or otherwise needs to get back. How do I select a free ticket without a return date? Can he just change the date when in London? I believe that you can't fly standby internationally, so do you just call and hope there's enough open seats that you can get on a flight when you want?
AA has a visit Europe pass that you can buy in the US to fly within Europe. Since he won't know before he goes when and where he will want to go, how should he travel and buy tickets? Plane, train (not automobile)?
