Saw it this weekend- indeed, a passenger was allowed to get off a plane after boarding (to retrieve an item left in the terminal), and then got back on a few minutes later. I'd always wondered if this was an option. It was a US Express plane.
Was the door already closed? If not, getting off the plane is usually no big deal. I've done it a couple of times when I needed to speak to the GA after I had already boarded. If the door was already closed, then it would be very unusual.
