I agree with Sweet Willie, first look into the other programs before commiting to a single program.

If you are working on a non extravagant budget, then in the US, starwood may be a better option, IMO

I personally find the Hilton hotels to be somewhat decrepid in the US, and much prefer the quality of the Starwood properties.
