Even if AA asks him to do the Challenge for Platinum status, it's still worthwhile to call for a comp. That way he'd earn bonus miles right from the start, earn those 500-mile upgrades, etc...

The upgrades are especially worthwhile, since any miles you fly while being a non-status AAdvantage member doesn't count toward the 4 per 10k count.
