(and believe it or not - its not quite as bad as you think. Downtown isnt anything to write home about - but many of the suburbs are quite nice seeing as how the area has no strong downtown to attract people away).
Sorry, didn't mean to insult anybody's hometown. I spent a week out there in December and the downtown area was every bit depressing as the media played it out to be. I felt like a prisoner in the hotel (Westin) because there was absolutely nothing in that area aside from a pizza joint behind the hotel. One of the nights we did make it out to the Bouzouki, for those of you who know what that is....
From what I hear the suburbs can be quite nice.

That being said, unless something major is going on dowtown (which I don't think there is) the Westin Book-Cadillac won't have a problem checking you in (though, if you reserved a king, they may only have two queens available, and if you really want it, you take it kind of thing)
Welcome to Detroit. It's NOT that bad. Are you here for awhile? Some of us DTW natives should take you out and show you it's actually a decent city.
I called the Westin and they said they can't guarantee an early checkin but at the same time they don't see any problems with allowing it assuming there are available rooms. I'll be taking a gamble if I give up the sure-thing shower at the SC and head straight to the Westin.
I'll probably be out here for a month or so, but still TBD.

I freshen up and put on a clean shirt after my TPAC to NRT before heading into town or onward to other Asian destinations. I have shirt folded from the cleaners and roll up my suit/jacket/pants in my carry-on roller.
They used to have complimentary amenities kit but none since three years ago. The only supplies are shower gels and shampoo in wall mounted dispensers. Bring your own shaving supplies.
Tip - There is usually one fresh towel on the counter for you. If you need more look in the closet.
If I were coming from home I'd have no problems in ensuring a freshly pressed shirt or a garment bag. However this project was sprung on me Thursday afternoon while I was in Dallas at a business casual client site and was not planning on returning home for the weekend (visiting family in SEA).
Luckily I normally travel with a blazer but I still had to scramble to a mall to purchase a few ties. I won't be the most coordinated one of the group since it's technically not a proper suit, but it will be close enough and will have to do for the first week.
I think I can rustle up some form of a cheapo Macy's garment bag today to put an ironed shirt in and ask the FA to hang in the F coat closet (still got the upgrade with 3 days advance purchase!).
Thanks for all the advice everybody.
