I manage a hotel and we used to have a problem with people stealing items that were just not meant to be taken. Hair dryers, alarm clocks etc. so now we have a descreete little label on the item at the end near the plug that says something like 'this is for use in the hotel if you wish to take it we will charge you $x" and the price is always crazy, like $50 for a hairdryer etc. Amazingly we have not lost anything since then.

however it has not stopped people stealing, amongst other things, the trash bins, pillows (they replace their crappy pillows with our nice pillows and think no-one will notice).

however it is rare for us to charge as we are a small hotel and don't want to cause ill will. however it does surprise me what people will take.

ohh and as for all the branded items. There seems to be some confusion. In our establishment it's pretty simple, consumables such as any of the little soaps etc in the bathroom are meant to be taken (we think of it as reminding the guests of their stay if they eventually use them) and slippers are also meant to be taken and we never recycle them.
