I am surprised at your shock.
It seems that some living in first world have no idea about life in not so affluent countries.

Maybe the staff take used slippers for themselves. Items once used are almost new to some. Salaries in Thailand are a lot lower than in the U.S. For example, a hotel receptionist makes about $200 a month in 2005 US$. I don't know what kind of slippers the poster was talking about. Unless you know what kind of slippers those were, making assumptions about their price is not proper. Considering that the poster felt like taking them home, is all the more reason to think they cost more than 20 to 60 cents. I doubt you can buy usable slippers, the kind a hotel guest would be tempted to steal, in a night market for that price.
