I had the American Express card with the annual fee, got the first year free, then after a year or so upgraded it to a card with an even higher annual fee because of the free companion ticket each year. That didn't work out as I expected it to so I downgraded to the American Express Delta Options card. It has no annual fee but you only get .5 miles per $1 spent. Not the best deal out there for sure, but it allows me to keep earning a few Delta miles every month and keeps my skymiles account active. My main card is an Alaska Airlines card (has an annual fee but I get a $99 companion ticket every year - it was $50 but was raised this year).
