Wow - that would be ideal for a lot of folks. Driving west out of CUN works very well, especially if the travellers are wanting to stop at Chichen Itza for a while.
The last time we were in this part of Mexico, we rented from Executive Rental Car at CUN and I was really impressed -- seriously. The quality of the car, the tires, etc, were all exceptional and I got a screaming good price (like $14/day plus insurance for a full size). I do recall checking into a one way, and the drop off was going to exceed the cost of the 9 day rental!
I wonder,
sc flier, if the agency you rented from NEEDED cars to be moved from CUN to MID (or wherever else) and that's how you managed a no-cost one way drop off.... (sort of like they do in the states this of year for one ways driving out of the state of Florida).
