I have flown the PHX-SMF leg several times and from the right side (DEF) going up (left side coming back ABC) you'll usually see the west end of the Grand Canyon, a great shot of Vegas, and sometimes a view of Lake Tahoe and the Sierras on approach.

I can't think of any advantage to left or right side on CLT-PHX, though having flown it very recently, there's still some snow over New Mexico - desert snow is always beautiful.

2D isn't a window seat.
