getting "upgraded" on Aeroplan points flight

Hi - I'm travelling Vancouver to Toulouse this summer on a rewards ticket, like this:

YVR - ORD (in United economy) - MUC (Lufthansa 1st class) - TLS (Lufthansa business).

Return is a nice TLS-FRA-YVR all in 1st class/business on Lufthansa. All for 100,000 points.

Obviously I didn't want the YVR-ORD in United economy (ick), but that was all they could find for me.

I want to change this preferably to a YVR-FRA 1st class direct flight, then on to TLS, or at the very least get to Chicago in business, preferably on Air Canada and not United.

Is the only way to accomplish this simply calling Aeroplan now and then to try and get them to change it, based on availability, or is there another trick?

Thanks - I'm new to FlyerTalk and have had great advice so far.

- Andrew
