You can DEFINITELY short-check your bags to YYZ only, especially if you have status. Tell them you have things in the luggage that you need to pass on to someone at YYZ before going on to DTW. That's perfectly legit. What they do is they only check you in FRA-YYZ and NOT YYZ-DTW. The agent will tell you you have to RE CHECK-IN at YYZ-DTW segment when you get to YYZ. The luggage tag will only mention FRA-YYZ.

It's more work for the agent since he/she has to offload you from the YYZ-DTW segment at FRA and split it to two trips, but it's definitely doable.

If you have a VERY TIGHT connection then the agent may say no, that's the only catch. In that case, best is to have ONLY carry-ons.
