As for all the other gold advantages: I haven't noticed that much of a difference. Sure - First Class check in and lounge are a bit nicer, but I was quite happy with being Silver as well.
But there are many other unpublished benefits to being a gold especially when things go wrong.
A small example, arrived at a German airport sans checked bag. Having taken details the BA lady went to a locked cupboard and got out the unisex overnight bag. "We just keep these for Golds" she whispered. I had to hang around the desk area for other reasons and heard the next passenger asking about any overnight things "sorry sir we have run out". As I had seen into the cupboard "oh no she hadn't".
As I say many advantages that aren't published.
