Yup, you pick them up and go through Canadian customs (which you would do anyway, before going through US customs) and then you just leave with the bags.
However, YMMV, but you should have no problem short-checking them. In fact, usually I just do an overnight stopover on a last leg I'll ditch and explain I will take the bags to stay with a friend...
