Companion(s): ORD-LAX

Given that I am flying on the same flight ORD-LAX, can I upgrade the non-status companion via linking PNRs or other method on that segment?
Yes, you can upgrade the non-status companion. I recently was in a similar situation and I asked to link PNRs of differing itineraries while starting my itinerary at the FRA AAdmiral's club. The agent there said that it couldn't be done.

In time-honored FT tradition, when I got to the DFW AAdmiral's club, I asked again, and the agent there looked up both my and my niece's PNRs and put her on the upgrade list for our shared flight. She also put the rest of my family members who weren't able to be upgraded in exit row seating for which they would ordinarily not have been eligible.

So...I'm not sure what the standard rule is regarding companions on different PNRs being allowed to share your elite privileges, but what you are suggesting is definitely possible.
