If you select "return", you generally end up paying much the same to come back to the UK (£92 return of which £15 for the flight and £77 for taxes!)
Yet if you want to either fly from AMS-LGW or AMS-LGW-AMS, on technically the same flight inbound, some of the economy prices are around £300+.
Checked with KLM as well. HUM-AMS comes in as £149 in economy, but if you fly AMS-HUM, single or return, you're looking at around €578 (£500?)!
Would have thought with UK "green" taxes, it would have been cheaper outside the UK.
Taxes make no difference as you will have to pay them, whether you start in the UK or NL.
As to KL, KL mainline still holds on to the sat night requirement for cheap fares, which means o/w fares or fares which do not involve a sat night are prohibitely expensive. You can get cheap o/w fares on the vlm flight to/from LCY, however, even when booked under KL code.
As far as BA is concerned, you CAN get cheap o/w fares ex-AMS to LON. They start at around €70 o/w, with a few euros difference between LGW and LHR. It is just a question of availability
