Yesterday I received a computer generated form letter from EL Paso saying my card was canceled and the points were forfeited.
Is there anything in this letter which leads you to believe that it is a reply to the letter that you sent to Fort Lauderdale? It sounds as if it is merely the written notice of the cancellation which you had already discovered on the website.

Note that you have a year to resolve the problem:

If for any reason we cancel any Linked Account (including because of your death, bankruptcy or insolvency), any points accrued in your program account will be forfeited. If we reinstate the Linked Account(s) within one year of cancellation, any points accrued in your program account may be converted into a participating Frequent Customer program or redeemed for a reward, provided all other conditions set forth herein have been met.

Note also that it is likely this would be arbitrated rather than litigated:
