And if you're comfortable with being flown to your destination by a young, inexperienced crew that may not have slept properly in days, is preoccupied with paying for basic necessities, and is coming to the end of a 12- or 16-hour shift, welcome aboard. Most fatal incidents in the US in the past decade are down to errors by this sort of crew. I'd prefer pilots who are paid a living wage in recognition of better qualifications.
And if I'm not comfortable with that situation, I can choose not to fly that airline or not to fly at all. I've done a lot of miles in the last few years and nobody has put a gun to my head and said "Get on the plane".
