The decision to return to ATL was not as simple as it seems.
It was most likely made
1) Length of runway
2) Availability of MX
3) Availability to swap with another airplane

It would be my guess that your partner would have made it later on if they did not have to close the runway.
The crew would have swapped airplanes and headed on out a few hours later (if they had the duty time)
