Last week travelling MSY-MIA-DCA, I was given a Group 1 boarding pass (I am Gold) and my wife was given Group 4 (she is non-Gold). We were seated in Row 13 on a 757. The agents at the pass readers let her board with me when Group 1 was called after I explained to her that we were together.
