The passport check/registration process can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes even for Elite, and longer if you are a peon.
That's the easy part to deal with. It just affects how long you sit in the RCC. However, getting the gate security check wait wrong means you either spend an extra 30 minutes in the overcrowded gate pen or almost miss the flight.
