For CDG, I would plan to arrive at LEAST 1.5 hour in advance of your UA flight if you are a UA Elite and 2 hours or 2.5 hours in advance if you're not an Elite.
The passport check/registration process can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes even for Elite, and longer if you are a peon.
The security check point in T1 can be a breeze at 10 minutes or a nightmare of 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day, and a host of other factors. They make you take off everything, belt included, as an example. I also see a lot of confiscation as many had mentioned in this thread.
